- Types of discrimination a person can experience in the workplace.
In the workplace, everyone deserves to feel safe and comfortable, which is why our government has important anti-discrimination and anti-harassment laws. As an employer, it is vital you be aware of the common types of discrimination and implement policies to minimize their occurrences. Legally recognized characteristics protected against discrimination include the following:
- Age
- Disability
- Race
- National origin
- Religious
Personally, I have experienced age discrimination, in fact, I have been working in an Engineering company, where I worked as a trainee Electrical Engineer. There was a time that I had to attend for the client meetings with my findings of the project progress, the meeting was held every week between the client and the company engineers, therefore my duty was to identify the risks of the project progress and come up with them in the meetings. But the opportunity I had to deliver my finding was very little, and I had to wait until the elder peers finish their presentations and when I ask for the chance I was denied and left behind.
There, I believe that such an organization has to identify the value of a person regardless of their age levels considering the skills and the effort a person put into a particular task. Moreover, the discrimination acts have to be implemented to prevent such unfortunate incidents in an organization.
